Disclaimer: This is not buying or investment advice. I’m simply reporting the data I’m seeing. Please do your own research and make your own decisions. Just because cards have increased in value up to this point, it doesn’t mean they will continue to do so.

The Ohtani market right now is as hot as any card market has ever been. Prices are up, demand is deep, and grading feels like an easy win.

But, as Mr. Realistic, that’s exactly when people get themselves into trouble.

From my view, the mistake most people make is simple: they chase PSA 10 upside.

I don’t.

I build everything around PSA 9.

Why? Because PSA 9 is the outcome you should expect with modern cards. Not hope for. Expect.

With that type of approach, the goal becomes:

  • Buy raw
  • Pay ~$50 all-in to grade (including shipping)
  • Get a PSA 9
  • Break even or come close

If that works, you’ve removed the downside. If it gems? That’s where you actually make money. (If it gets worse than a 9, then it’s a different discussion entirely.)

The Filter: What Actually Makes a “Good” Card to Grade

When you apply that thinking to your data, the signal becomes clear fast.

You’re looking for cards that:

  • Have a PSA 9-to-raw ratio of ~2.2x or higher
  • Sell consistently (not one random comp)
  • Sit in a price range where everyday collectors can play

Once you factor in grading fees, selling fees, and the reality that the market can shift while your card is gone for 2–3 months, anything below that range gets risky quickly.

The Best Ohtani Cards to Grade Right Now (Affordable Tier)

Important reminder: “best” is subjective.

These cards are pulled directly from MarketMovers data and filtered over the last 30 days for:

  • Strong PSA 9 ratios
  • Sub-$150 raw buy range (give or take)
  • Real margin after costs

That’s where I personally feel the best opportunities are. You don’t have to agree.

2023 Topps Chrome Cosmic Planetary Pursuit (Sun)

  • Raw: ~$100
  • PSA 9: ~$250
  • Ratio: 2.50x

Why it works:
This is exactly what you’re looking for. Strong spread, strong visual appeal, and enough margin to survive fees and a market dip.

Grading math:

  • Cost in: $150
  • Net out (after eBay fees): ~$217
  • Profit cushion: ~$60+

Even if prices soften, you’re still in a good spot.

The Problem: Cheapest BIN option on eBay is $300 Best Offer. Gem Rate also could be higher, sitting at 38.3%.

2018 Topps Update Salute

  • Raw: ~$60
  • PSA 9: ~$132
  • Ratio: 2.21x

Why it works:
Rookie-year insert, recognizable, and liquid. The margin is thinner, but the entry price is low.

Grading math:

  • Cost in: $110
  • Net out: ~$115

This is a true break-even play. You’re grading for the chance at a PSA 10. PSA gem rate for this one is currently 32.2%.

2018 Topps Now Award Winners

  • Raw: ~$115
  • PSA 9: ~$250
  • Ratio: 2.13x

Why it works:
Tied to a specific Ohtani moment, which helps demand. Slightly below the ideal ratio, but still viable because of the upside.

Grading math:

  • Cost in: ~$165
  • Net out: ~$217

More room than it looks at first glance.

The Problem: Cheapest BIN right now on eBay is about $235.

2018 Topps #700 (Base Rookie)

  • Raw: ~$100
  • PSA 9: ~$208
  • Ratio: 2.07x

Why it works:
It’s the flagship rookie. Always liquid. Always in demand, so less of a ratio needed IMO.

Grading math:

  • Cost in: $150
  • Net out: ~$180

Not a huge margin, but very stable. Pop 10 is a staggering 11,000+ with a 47.6%.

2018 Topps Stadium Club Power Zone

  • Raw: ~$100
  • PSA 9: ~$196
  • Ratio: 1.96x

Why it makes the list:
This is where things get borderline. The ratio is lower, but collector appeal and design help it hold value.

Grading math:

Cost in: $150
Net out: ~$170

This works if you’re selective on condition. 42% PSA gem rate.

2018 Bowman Platinum #34

  • Raw: ~$84
  • PSA 9: ~$155
  • Ratio: 1.85x

Why it’s risky (but still relevant):
This is your lower boundary. On paper it works. In practice, it’s fragile.

Grading math:

  • Cost in: ~$134
  • Net out: ~$135

Any dip, and you’re losing money. And, check the gem rate—currently less than 30%.

What About the Bigger Cards?

Yes, there are cards in your data with 2.5x–3x+ ratios and massive spreads.

But they require:

  • Thousands in upfront cost
  • Less liquidity
  • More exposure if the market shifts

That’s a different game.

This section is about cards you can actually buy, grade, and move consistently without tying up your bankroll.

A Quick Example of What Might Not Work Soon: All Aces

All Aces is one of the most popular Ohtani inserts right now.

It looks like a great grading candidate:

  • Strong design
  • High demand
  • Solid PSA 10 upside

But when you run it through the same filter, it falls short.

The PSA 9 spread typically sits closer to ~2.0x or lower depending on timing.

It’s a high-print insert. That leads to:

  • A lot of PSA 9 copies hitting the market
  • More competition between sellers
  • Faster price softening if demand cools

So even if it works today, it’s more exposed over time than the cards listed above. Not saying it can’t work. It clearly is. Just one to be careful of when timing becomes a factor. Gem rate is relatively high, though, at 60+%.

The Part No One Talks About: Time Risk

When you send a card to PSA, you’re making a bet on the future.

You’re locking in:

  • Today’s buy price
  • Today’s grading cost
  • And hoping the market holds while you wait 60–90 days

If Ohtani cools off even slightly, your PSA 9 comps come down.

That’s why margin matters so much.

A 2.5x ratio can absorb that.

A 1.9x ratio usually can’t.

The Bottom Line

The best Ohtani cards to grade right now aren’t the flashiest ones.

They’re the ones where:

  • PSA 9 covers your cost
  • The card sells easily
  • And you don’t need a PSA 10 to win

If you stick to that, you’re not chasing grading outcomes.

You’re putting yourself in position to profit when they hit.
