2022 was a huge year in baseball cards with the arrival of Julio Rodriguez RCs and Elly De La Cruz 1st Bowman autos. Together, the young stars continue to power the hobby forward as we look back before the calendar turns to a fresh year and new season.

Now, we all know the hobby market moves and grooves like no other.

We also all can mostly agree that tens of thousands of dollars for a card of players who have either yet to step into the big leagues or are very new is tough to stomach for anyone who doesn’t like risk. Jackson Holliday, Jackson Chourio, and James Wood make up the former group, while Elly De La Cruz and Julio Rodriguez make up the ladder.

Thankfully, for my own sanity, we also see MLB legends (players you’d exepct to be selling for the most) like Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., and Shohei Ohtani.

In terms of other takeaways, Elly De La Cruz set the baseball world on fire with electric play and on-field success aplenty when he was called up by the Cincinnati Reds this past season. In response, his cards make up multiple entries on the list.

You’ll also note that all of De La Cruz’s cards are Bowman and Chrome, which makes sense given we won’t see his Topps rookie cards until 2024, and Chrome values tend to dominate their paper counterparts.

Both of the Jacksons, Chourio and Holliday carry the next wave of youngsters looking to make a splash, with Jackson Chourio expected to be in the Brewers’ 2024 starting lineup after recently inking a record-breaking $82 million contract extension, and Jackson Holliday shooting up the ranks and putting himself in position to crack the Opening Day roster.

Without surprise, we also see a LOT of PSA on the list of most expensive 2022 baseball cards. In fact, PSA is the only grading service among all of the cards on the list—no BGS, no SGC.

For the 1/1s, this reflects the fact that people are choosing PSA to grade their “only one on earth” cards. For other cards with less scarcity and thus more copies, it could show that PSA results in the best graded value.

As an example, if you look outside of this 90-day window, we can see a comparison of BGS vs. PSA with the 2022 Bowman Elly De La Cruz Chrome Gold Auto /50:

• $23K PSA 10 on 7/27/23
• $15.7K BGS 9.5 on 7/24/23
• $22.1K PSA 10 on 7/17/23

All in all, the next time we update this 90 days into the future, we will be knocking on the door of Spring Training. So, I’d expect things to shake up by then, if not soon after.
